The Underground and Trains

Public Transportation is very good. Trains or buses link most communities. The Underground (also called the Tube), commonly known to some of us as the subway, is very quick and convenient especially for travel within London. If you reside outside the Underground system, railway companies (like Chiltern Railways) run trains into stations that are part of the system, providing a link between the outlying districts and the city. There are daily, weekly, monthly and annual passes for adults and children, offering considerable savings. These can be bought at the station or through some newsagents prior to travel, but not on the train or bus. In addition, there are discount cards available. Ask the ticket agent about The Network Card (for adults) and The Young Persons Railcard (for 16 to 25 yr. olds). Pick up Bus, Train Guides, and Tube maps at your nearest station. Also ask about the Family One Day Travel Card and the Family Rail Card. In addition, the Travel Cards to London are also good on all London Transport buses, the Docklands Light Railway and Chiltern Railways.

The following places outside of London all have Underground Stations:
Amersham, Chesham, Chorleywood, Harrow, Little Chalfont, Northwood, Pinner, Rickmansworth, Ruislip, and Uxbridge.

To find out about engineering works and Sunday service, you can get recorded information 24 hours a day. Phone 01494 443497. In addition, The Buckinghamshire County Council Traveline has information about rail, bus and coach travel in the Buckinghamshire area. Phone 0345 382000.

Trains

You can travel just about anywhere you want in Great Britain via the railways. Phone 0845 7484950 (for National Rail Enquiries, www.nationalrail.co.uk) or 0870 5165165 (for Chiltern Railways, www.chilternrailways.co.uk) any time of day to get train schedule information and book tickets. Trains meet the Underground at the following Stations:

Gerrards Cross/Beaconsfield/Amersham area -- Marylebone Station on the Bakerloo Line.
Slough/Maidenhead/Windsor area -- Paddington Station on the District, Circle, and Bakerloo Lines.
Windsor/Eton/Datchet area - Waterloo Station on the Jubilee, Northern, and Bakerloo lines.

Parking is available at rail/underground stations for a small cost per day. You may need coins for Pay & Display lots.

Private Cars

In some areas, private transportation is a must. Many car dealers have computer access to complete information regarding all the used cars of their type that are for sale. Decide what you are looking for and then ask them to find it for you. Prices are only slightly negotiable. The American Women's Clubs also advertise members' cars that are for sale when they are leaving the country.

Licensing

For information about driving and automobile licensing, see Driving Licenses.

Parking

Large Pay & Display parking lots are available in each village. Have small coins available at all times. Buy the ticket using a machine in the parking lot and then display the ticket on the inside of your front windshield.
Be aware of posted regulations regarding parking. Clamping - a metal clamp fixed to the wheel of your car - can occur if you park illegally, with removal only on the payment of a fine

Breakdown Insurance

There are several companies that provide insurance in case of a breakdown while you are driving. You might like to check with one of the following.
