As many of you utilize the Internet in your daily communications
we have reviewed the following web sites as useful tools to assist
in your search for the college or university that is meant for
you.
http://www.ecis.org
ACS is a member of ECIS (European Council of International Schools)
to which some of the best North American colleges and universities
also belong. ECIS represents about 1000 international schools
worldwide. Almost 350 of the top US and Canadian institutions
as well as some British universities are members of ECIS. The
ECIS web site has a search engine by which you can look for colleges
by state, country, or major, follow the “Directories” link
from the home page, then the “On-line Higher Education
Directory” to get to the search engine.
http://home.flash.net/~scitech/american.htm
This web site provides an alphabetical listing of most all US colleges
and universities that link directly to the college or university
home page. Most useful to students who already have a list of
schools that they want to explore more closely.
http://www.clas.ufl.edu/CLAS/american-universities.html
A similar web site to the flash.net listing above, this particular
alpha list also has links to a fairly complete Canadian universities
list, a list of 1172 community college links, and an international
universities list of over 7300 links. Run by the University of
Florida, it does provide a wider range of services than the Flash.net
service.
http://w3.one.net/~jeaton/collegeinfo.htm
This site links you to the next recommended web site (www.allaboutcollege.com).
In addition, there are links to both SAT and ACT home pages for
registering for those exams. Senior students (who are US citizens
or permanent residents) can also have their parents fill out
the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) on-line
anytime after 1 January of their Senior year.
http://www.allaboutcollege.com
A fairly decent site that allows searches of universities by region
of the world: US, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Africa, South America,
Asia, and Australia. The reference section also includes help
with financial aid questions, test preparation, study abroad,
etc. Once you find a particular school you wish to find out more
about, this service allows you to either go to the college’s
official web site, e-mail the admissions office, or go to a chat
room dedicated to that college.
http://edonline.com/collegecompass
Surprisingly good site that not only allows you to search for colleges
by state or region but also has an excellent interest inventory/self-evaluation
survey and a college selection checklist. Well worth a look.
http://www.collegeboard.org
Official site of the U.S. College Board. Includes invaluable information:
online registration for admissions tests, test preparation tips
and materials, a search programme covering all U.S. colleges
and universities and many other useful features.
http://www.commonapp.org
Many top-ranked private U.S. colleges and universities accept this
application form, which can simplify the process considerably.
http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/corank.htm
Controversial and fascinating annual rankings of U.S. colleges
and universities.
http://www.college-visits.com
ACS uses this organization for our annual College Visits, but students
may prefer to join other College Visits trips as listed on this
site.
http://www.acuinfo.com
This is a new site featuring ECIS member colleges and universities
(see the main ECIS site described on the front of this handout.)
http://www.onlinecollegefair.com
A new venture that places college fairs online on certain dates.
You can get general information about the participating institutions
and chat with admissions staff members as well as with students.
See now for upcoming Fair dates.
http://www.ucas.ac.uk
This is the official site of the U.K.’s Universities and
Colleges Admissions Service. It has an excellent search programme
covering all courses in the U.K. (Please note, however, that all
applications to U.K. institutions must be submitted through ACS.)
http://www.mit.edu:8001/people/cdemello/ca.html
This site lists links to all Canadian universities. (If you replace
ca.html with univ.html, it links university sites throughout
the world.) This site seems to be the hobby of an MIT student,
so it may not be around forever and it is no longer being updated
- but, then, universities don’t change their URL’s
very often.
http://www.ouac.on.ca
The official site for the Ontario Universities Admissions Center.
Ontario (Canada) runs a centralized applications process, and
you can apply online.
http://www.ibo.org
The official site for The International Baccalaureate Organization.
