Children are at the heart of ACS Egham’s Lower School,
and our reason for being here. They need to feel that those who
teach them really care, and know them well as individuals, and
that their teachers believe in their ability to succeed and have
high expectations of them. Our faculty strives to make every student
feel special and valued. Teachers work closely with students and
their families to discover individual interests and learning styles,
and to set and reflect on individual learning goals. Every student
is special, and our role is to give each the support to become
the best he or she can be.
We aim to inspire our students with a passion for learning that
will give them a sound foundation for successful academic careers, and
for productive, involved, and satisfying lives. In our classrooms,
learning through the International Baccalaureate Primary Years
Programme (IBPYP) is both challenging and fun.
We firmly believe that every child has intelligence and abilities,
and it is our job to make room for ability of all kinds to root
and grow. A ‘one size fits all’ approach to education
is not what we regard as good teaching or good learning. Differentiating
instruction is absolutely necessary. In this world of so much
readily available knowledge, we must help students concentrate
on what they need to know and understand, how to think logically,
and how to puzzle through problems.
Our students are encouraged to respect and enjoy diversity of
cultures, beliefs and ideas. They learn to value intellectual
pursuits, creative expression, and the importance of good social
skills.
We recognise the importance of deep cognitive learning from an
early age together with a sound grounding in the traditional basics
of literacy and numeracy. We also recognise the importance of
the ‘new basics’ such as broad communication skills,
problem solving skills, teamwork, and the ability to apply learning
to new situations.
At ACS Egham we teach through our curriculum the attitudes that
bring both success in life and a sense of personal wellbeing:
the ability to feel empathy, self-confidence, and a sense of belonging
and responsibility. The ACS Egham Lower School gives its students
opportunities to extend and apply their learning by demonstrating
responsible behaviour through positive action and service.
