  Guidance & Counselling

The goal of the experienced and competent guidance staff at ACS Egham is to assist students and families in making a successful transition into the School community. Students are offered a comprehensive programme of university, academic and personal counseling. Every effort is made to ensure that the student is placed in the appropriate academic programme at ACS Egham as well as receiving the best advice for successful placement into a university setting.

The welcoming size of the High School at ACS Egham permits the Academic Dean to act simultaneously as the School’s Guidance Counselor. Every Upper School student has easy access to the Guidance Office, and is encouraged to develop a relationship with the Academic Dean/Guidance Counselor. Questions and concerns about class scheduling, the International Baccalaureate programme, transcripts and credits, post-secondary planning, UCAS forms, grading policies, and student performance are common topics of discussion, as are more personal matters that might require assistance, support and understanding. The Guidance Counselor is also involved in weekly advisory sessions that promote healthy living, wise decision-making, and the development of successful study skills.

All ACS Egham students are encouraged to set themselves high academic and personal goals, and to develop a strong work ethic to reach those goals. Small class sizes and a supportive staff allow the Guidance Counselor to monitor student progress carefully. If a student is struggling in one or more classes, a discussion between the student, teachers, parents, and the Guidance Counselor will focus on ways to improve that student’s performance. If necessary, further conferences with the above team as well as the Principal and a special needs instructor are also available to generate positive approaches for academic and personal success for the student.

Students will be offered information and advice on planning for college during advisory times and during individual meetings with the Guidance Counselor. The guidance office houses a library of resources that is available for student and parental use. The reference material in the library also provides information on colleges and universities, college entrance exams and rankings, careers and career assessments.

Prospectuses from colleges around the world are available for student use. College representatives regularly visit our campus to talk to the students. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in regional college fairs and college open days, to see for themselves what options are available. We also hold an annual Career Day each May, when speakers from a variety of fields and academic institutions share their expertise and career journeys with ACS students.
