Girls Soccer Team Crowned ISST Champions

John Surguy, Athletic Director

The 2005 Girls Varsity Soccer team won the ISST championships held in Bonn Germany, November 9-12.

The Hawks enjoyed a good season, which began in early September and culminated in winning the ISST tournament in Bonn.

As coach I worked with the players to develop a new tactical system, which made it harder for the opposition to score against us, and right from the outset this worked well.  The team conceded fewer goals than in previous years – During the tournament we conceded no goals... GO HAWKS!

The team was strengthened for the tournament by the inclusion of two 8th Graders Ana Gonzales-Noguchi and Cindy Dapogny who took the places of the injured Isabel Manalo and non-traveller Kumiko Ueda.

Let the games begin

The tournament began with the first of the five games being played against Antwerp who had beaten us earlier in the season.  The Hawks dominated the game but despite this failed to score until an excellent move from Ana Gonzales-Noguchi set up Emily Rolling who scored a fine goal.

Winning the first game gave the girls confidence as the next pool match was against the much fancied St.Johns.  In a tight game the Hawks won again 1-0 thanks to a great low shot from 20 yards scored by Grace Ferguson Pell.

The second day saw us in a quarterfinal game against Tel Aviv, Israel. Within 15 minutes we had scored three impressive goals from Ana, Grace and Yuka Urai. In the second half Grace scored again to make the final result 4-0.

The afternoon game was therefore the semi final against the technically excellent Zurich. The Hawks won 1-0 thanks to a Kristina Korsgard penalty after Grace had been tripped in the area.

The Final was played on the Saturday morning against Frankfurt who was a robust and athletic team. Both teams had chances but the final result even after extra time was 0-0. In ISST tradition there are no tiebreakers at this stage and the trophy was shared.

Two of the Hawks team were awarded the coveted All tournament patches, there are Kristina Korsgard and Grace Ferguson Pell.

All of the team received champion’s patches, medals and a beautiful glass trophy.

Congratulations to all of the team, and assistant coaches Craig Jobbins and Cindy Goodall.
