International Recognition for Hillingdon Singers

Rick Hein, High School Choir Director

Hillingdon singers under the baton of Dr. Edith Copely

ACS Hillingdon singers joined students from 55 schools around the world in the 32nd AMIS International Honor Band and Choir Festival held in the Conservatoire de Luxembourg. Their journey to the concert hall began in October when they submitted their audition tapes. They had to perform two exercises and sing an excerpt from an art song. The students were selected to be one of the 180 members of the AMIS International Honor Mixed Choir and the AMIS International Honor Women’s Choir from over 450 applicants. The ACS choir members attending the festival were Jade Walter, Jeff Walter, Tiffany Linney, Morgan Thain, Jason Ross, Kelly Skledar and Jeanri Bruwer.

The mixed choir was conducted by Dr. Therees Tkach Hibbard of the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and the women’s choir was conducted by Dr. Edith Copely of the University of Northern Arizona. The programs ranged from music of the baroque through contemporary music. One of the highlights for the singers in the women's choir was a an arrangement of a Czech folk song "Hoj, hura hoj" where soloists sang from the corners of the stage to represent singing from mountainside to mountainside. The mixed choir performed a contemporary choral piece, "Famine Song" by VIDA, which told of the plight of Ethiopians during the drought.

The finale of the concert was a massed choir performance with the 90 piece AMIS International Honor Band of "A Jubilant Song" by John Leavitt with a text by Walt Whitman.

Next year the Festival returns to where it was founded – The American School in London. In the start of the new school year, the audition process will begin again leading to the 33rd annual AMIS International Honor Band and Choir Festival. ACS music students will once again have the opportunity to audition for the opportunity to work with two of the finest conductors in the world – Anthony Maiello of George Mason University and André Thomas, from Florida State University.
