Haiti Fundraising at Egham

The ACS Egham Community was devastated by the scenes that came from their television screens after the Haiti earthquake and many areas of the school, with students taking the lead decided to try and help. Here are two accounts of what has happened so far at ACS Egham.

Grade 10 - Can Drive

Sresha Bannerjee “Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.” These few words by William James have summarized everything that we have been working for. The Salvation Army Can Drive for the Haiti relief is a project that we took on for our community and service in Grade 10. We felt that it was important to try and make a difference.

When we started we did not know how we would go about getting the cans or why people would donate their cans of food, but the results were quite pleasing. What we kept in our minds was that no matter what the outcome was, we were still making a difference. The earthquake in Haiti had impacted on lives of many and while we are here, we should be thankful for all we have and try to help out the ones who are not as fortunate as we are. We have four small cartons filled with cans of food donated by the students and parents of ACS Egham International School.

This Community & Service project was about making a difference, and it will make a difference however small.

All School - Build a Paperhouse Fundraiser

For the latest community project, we have been trying to raise money for the situation in Haiti. In the reception area at both break and lunchtime, we walk around with a donation box and pieces of paper. The idea is that when a person donates one pound or more, the person would sign their name on a piece of paper. This piece of paper is posted on a cut-out of a school, representing the money that is rebuilding it, as we are helping Haiti rebuild. We have one other visual representation for how much money we are raising in the form of a thermometer.

As international students, we have learned that we have a responsibility when being a part of a community. When one group of people are in trouble, as the people in Haiti are, we have a responsibility to help out. By creating a project of our own, it gives us the feeling that we ourselves are making a difference through our hard work. Initially created by Ms.Dalle and Ms McAvoy, a variety and 10th graders and several IB students worked in conjunction to make this project possible.

We want to thank on behalf of Haiti all those who contributed their donations - which has already topped £400.
