The 1st Grade students recently enjoyed a Unit of Inquiry called, “Let’s Celebrate.” During this unit, the children inquired into how people celebrate their values and beliefs through celebrations. We focused on the values and beliefs people celebrate around the world and how people celebrate these values and beliefs. The students learned how the same festival is celebrated around the world in different ways.
Throughout this unit, the students researched celebrations around the world. They also made crafts, sang songs, tried new food, listened to traditional stories, and performed an English dance. We had many parent visitors who came into our classes to share how they celebrated their important festivals.
To celebrate our learning at the end of the unit, the 1st Grade families gathered together. The students shared with their parents their new knowledge and understanding of what is a value and a belief. They showed and explained their projects for various celebrations that connected to specific values. This unit has continued throughout the school year as the students are able to identify the values of teh many festivals they celebrate.
