Langley Grammar School Choir Collaboration

US Choir

In full voice - the choir...

On Tuesday 9th March, the Egham School Choir visited the Langley Grammar School for a Recital. It was a cloudy day as the students trailed off the coach and carrying their instruments and music folders into the school. We sat in the main Music Hall and had a practice session, but then all of their Grade 8 students came into the Hall and the concert commenced.

Langley Grammar school went first playing “Sitting on the dock”, their main pianist was Gina Emerson, a very talented student. A number of other pieces were performed by groups and individuals.

Then it was time for ACS, with introductions by James and Jenna, we heard some absolutely magical pieces, Kathleen Peterson performing Sonata in G major by Mozart, Marcin Dawydzik playing the Prelude and Fugue in D minor by Bach, the Jazz Messengers conducted by Simon Cook with “Things ain’t what they used to be” and St Thomas.

Alexander Harris played his own composition “Cave of the Mind”, but one of the most exciting sections was when he was given a few unrehearsed notes by Mrs Walters, and asked to do an improvisation. The improvisation is one of the IB Music requirements and the rapt audience listened in stunned silence as he played the most amazing piece completely improvised. (I did notice he was surrounded by an admiring Langley School female audience during the lunch break that followed but we will say no more of that!!).

Nathaniel Haley performed a piece by Piatti, and the Harmony choir sang a South African song “Singabahambayo” which was performed in both Zulu and English. Finally, the choirs from both schools joined forces and sang Porgy and Bess. It was an amazing experience for everyone and a thoroughly enjoyable day out.

Thanks to Mrs Walters and Mr Cook.
