Like other IB courses, IB Art lasts two years and has a final examination at the end. However, unlike all other IB courses, the final examination for IB Art takes the form of an interview with a visiting examiner, looking at an exhibition of the students' artwork produced over the previous two years; students who began this course in August 2005 worked throughout the following two years to produce the creative and original artwork that was displayed in the Mansion House Assembly Room between April 19th and 23rd.
There is no 'required' theme, but there is a requirement that students explore and research a theme of their choice in their art. Almost all of the artwork created by our students is based on thorough and wide-ranging research, both into art and artists, and into this theme of the student's choice.
This year some students decided to focus on 'real-world' issues such as human rights, while others chose to make images in response to such themes as 'Vices and Virtues', the oppression of emotions, and advertising. The resulting exhibitions contained many thoughtful images as well as some compelling and adventurous pieces.
I would like to congratulate all six IB artists for creating such individual, vibrant and thought-provoking portfolios of art containing a range of ideas and reflecting their two-year personal and artistic journeys
