Bright Sparks in Grade 3

BY Melinda Borland, Gr 3 Teacher

Grade 3 have just finished an exciting Unit of Inquiry into Electricity.  We have learnt that electricity is an important energy source that impacts on our lives in many ways.  We have experimented with circuits, tested conductors, insulators and voltage and have learnt to draw circuit diagrams.  We have then applied what we have learnt to create a toy or game using a circuit.  We really enjoyed solving design problems and sharing what we had created with others.

We have also learnt about how electricity is generated, and how this often creates pollution.   Fortunately, scientists are working on ways to generate electricity in a more environmentally friendly way.  Finally, we have designed surveys for our families and friends to evaluate their use of electricity.  Using the results of these surveys, we have made recommendations about how we can all use electricity more responsibly.
