Developing Understanding Caring and Kindness. This was the theme behind this year’s lower school DUCK Week, an annual event at ACS Cobham. The idea comes from a charity drive begun in 1995, where a donation would buy a rubber duck. At the end of the charity drive, all the ducks could be seen bobbing up and down in Guildford’s wave pool. ACS Cobham has created their own version to actively involve kids in fundraising.
This year, between November 19-23, the children came to school with a maximum of £2 everyday. For 20 minutes every morning they got to walk around classrooms, where each grade had different activities set up. There was karaoke, along with a series of carnival games. Healthy snacks such as muffins and popcorn, as well as used books and DVD’s donated by the kids, could be bought, usually within the range of 20-30p. The “Duck Hats” especially, were a huge success.
LS DUCK week usually raises around £2000, of which £1000 goes to the Mayor of Elmbridge Charity, and £1000 goes to a different local charity each year. Often, a representative from the chosen local charity comes to talk to kids about the charity’s purpose, and where the raised money will go. DUCK Week is an opportunity for the kids to realize that a little fun can go a long way.
