Troy Miller, Femi Temowo, and Grant Windsor came together to form the Troy Miller Trio. ACS had the privilege of hosting them for a jazz workshop on the morning of Thursday 18th. Although the workshop focused primarily on jazz, it was open to all high school musicians. During the workshop, they shared tips and suggestions on how to become a successful musician, focusing on aspects such as rhythm and improvisation. According to students from the school, the most exciting part was when they talked about improvisation, sharing the many tricks that they have learned over their long and fruitful careers. The Trio would pull students up to improvise with them on the spot, and Femi kept the audience laughing with his hilarious lyrics. Although nervous at the beginning, many students grew comfortable with the setting and were able to take the musicians’ considerations and integrate them into their playing. The evening concert was just as successful as the morning workshop. The show consisted of the High School Musicians, including the jazz band, and solo musicians as well as the Troy Miller Trio. The school jazz band per
ormed several songs to great success, and each section had their own small improvised solo that showed off the individual talent of the musicians.
After a short break, the Jazz Trio took the stage and performed several of their own compositions. This was an outstanding performance that never failed to grip the audience. Even after performing with legends such as Amy Winehouse and Roy Ayers, they still were able to connect with the students and put on a great show, and it was truly a showcase that our music department was proud to hold.
