I never realized exactly how GPS worked before last week. It was so interesting to try to create art using GPS and was a completely different experience than anything I’ve ever done. I learned about all of the different uses and potential uses of GPS. The thought that everyone will be utilizing GPS signalling in the future is an interesting idea and I think could be beneficial in some ways. I think it could benefit security because if a crime took place and a person was tracked using GPS, he or she could be caught and not much time of money would have to be used in investigating the crime. The potential uses are limitless really. GPS has only recently been put into the public’s eye and things like navigation systems that one can put in his/her car have proved really useful. Of course problems would arise, like privacy issues, if GPS was used so broadly, but I think it is safe to say that GPS is more beneficial than harmful to us.
To say more about GPS as art, it was very interesting to see all of the different ways in which Mr. Wood made a simple GPS signal into a piece of art. I think the most interesting piece was the one where a dog was tagged with GPS and allowed to run around which ended up making the picture of a dog’s face. That was ridiculously cool. To see the patterns of Mr. Wood’s travels was also very interesting, and it was obvious that he had some kind of routine just by looking at the streets that he most often travelled by. Art can take many forms, and GPS has just been added in my mind as a viable source of art.
