Varsity Girls Soccer stay fit and stay in touch.

Charlotte Turston, Grade 11 Student

Group Huddle

In order to keep up their fitness and skills for next year’s season, the ACS Cobham Girls Varsity Soccer team has been taking part in an outside of school football tournament sponsored by the Independent Schools Football Association for Girls(ISFAG).  The tournament consists of a number of different schools throughout the country, and in the two years that Cobham has participated in this tournament they have played other British schools at both a Senior and Prep School level.

Last year Cobham came away from the tournament with the Gold Medal, showing their enthusiasm and commitment to the sport. This year they hope to do the same and are already well on their way. First off, the tournament for Cobham was an away game held at Herstpierpoint College. The girls did not know what to expect from this opposing team and arrived at the astro turf pitch to see their opponents practising intimidating drills and ball skills. Once the match started however, Cobham saw that this was just a deception and played to their full, finishing the game off with an incredible 7-0 win.

Excited and enthused Cobham went on to play their semi-finals against Sevenoaks School in Kent. Starting the game off with a bang the Cobham girls scored in the first five minutes, giving them an immediate boost in confidence. As the game progressed though doubts were starting to arise when Sevenoaks scored two goals for themselves, putting Cobham down one point by half time. With a heartfelt speech from both Coach Webster and Coach Bainbridge, the Cobham girls went back on the pitch with a  gold in mind,to win. By the end of another intense half where the Cobham girls had poured heart and soul into 45 minutes to win the game the score came to 3-3, making overtime an imminent option. Backed by a determined defence, Cobham’s forwards took the game into their own hands, and with an amazing free kick by Tala Radejko the ball flew into the top right corner of the net, securing a place in the final for the Cobham girls. Let’s hope they recuperate after an amazing game and bring home another Gold Medal to Cobham! Good Luck girls!
