From the first day of intensive tryouts we all realised how hard we were going to have to work. Over 30 people showed up with the hope of being picked for the team. A week later, the selected dancers were all introduced to each other, and we were given insight to the season ahead.
We started off with a crazy schedule and our practices seemed to go on forever. We would have a 30-minute warm up every practice, including many sit-ups, push-ups, and splits. Many people don’t realize how much pain and sweat we go through to improve our dancing. Every practice, we would push ourselves to do hundreds of sit-ups, all different varieties, including some in a straddle position to work our legs as well. We would hold splits for minutes, going further down to become more flexible, which is necessary for dance. During our practices, Debs, our coach, would teach us dances that she spent hours choreographing at home. By the end of the season, we had learned and perfected several dances.
These dances are the ones we perform at varsity basketball games for half-time entertainment. The dance team is also performing at the school fashion show, which is always hectic to prepare for, but so much fun to dance at.
On March 10th, we will be competing in the iDance UK Hip Hop Crew Championships. Weare entering under the crew name of “Fusion Point” because we believe it fits our team mix of nationalities, which come together to create our varsity dance team.
