Celebrating 30 years of Excellence at ACS Cobham

Brett Foley , 9th Grade student

Mr Lehman talking to students

There were a few flared trousers, wide collars and clashing colours that eased out of the proverbial woodwork and hidden closet collections. In the Marble Hall were displays of how the school used to be. Pictures of prior students showed bell-bottom pants and flashy shirts. The 70’s were back at ACS Cobham for one day only, a fashion statement from the brave to kick-off the 30th anniversary celebration of our great schoool.

The way we were

We were told stories of how everyone remembered the school. Back in the good-old-days all students used to have an hour break for lunch and were allowed to roam anywhere on campus, as long as they were back in time for classes. Students developed a fine tradition of throwing classmates into the local stream to celebrate their birthday, and this show of affection is apparently when restrictions started to be applied.

A very well put together presentation by David Taylor, a Cobham town resident, historian and author focused on the history of our school and the Cobham Community. It included interesting points such as how King Henry the 8th had roped off the area of Heywood to use as his personal hunting grounds and how possibly the Roman road had run straight through this area. Heywood is full of history and Mr Taylor's talk was an opportunity not to be missed. He had also collected beautiful photographs which were well researched. This presentation was on display with David circulating amongst people and providing personal insights.

Arthur Boulter a registered guide who once lived and worked on the Heywood Estate as a young man had many fascinating insights to share with listeners about life on the estate many years ago.

School tours where also offered by some of the students. Arthur Boulter met with the students in advance to provide them with some special insights about the land, the buildings, and the people who made up the history of our school. Parents and guests had the opportunity to take a tour of the campus with ‘expert’ guides.

Photographs, yearbooks, and other memorabelia connected with our school history were displayed in the Marble Hall. Also, the contents of a “Time Capsule” was displayed, with student representatives on hand to explain what we’ve chosen to include, and why.

To round is all off, a special birthday cake was presented for the whole range of ACS generations to enjoy, and share the good, old and future times.
