I am sure that many of you have heard of the organisation called Habitat for Humanity, but how may really know the extent of their work? I for one did not have a clue. Habitat for Humanity believes that shelter is a primary need for all, making simple and decent shelter a basic human right.
Many people this year have already benefited from the selfless generosity that this organisation provides, and as our teacher, Mrs Marchese Braden outlines “Habitat for Humanity is a great charity that is very gratifying to all who are involved, most particularly to students who are pleased to selflessly help others less fortunate than them. Last year at a site in London students came in and helped out by digging trenches, putting in insulation and generally labouring around the site. Not only are there students from our school, but there are many other clubs like the one we have here at ACS situated around the world”.
The Habitat for Humanity web site states that about one billion people are living in inadequate dwellings in urban areas. Habitat for Humanity is currently looking for more buildings sites around England that the charity can help out with, but if you are not able to help out at the build sites you can also help out by giving generously to the appeals that the ACS Cobham club does around the school, like the Candy Gram Sale money we directed to help the victims of the Hurricane Katrina. So if the idea of helping out your fellow citizen appeals to you go along to one of our regular meetings that are usually held in the Middle School Auditorium at 10:05 on Wednesdays, or visit http://www.habitat.org.eca/ for more information.
