English as an Additional Language (EAL) for 1st to 10th Grades
Our English as an Additional language (EAL) programme is designed
to help students whose native language is not English. EAL teachers
work closely with their students in the classroom, and one-on-one
or in small groups outside the classroom, to support speaking,
listening, reading and writing needs.
The EAL programme is structured around two principles based on
research findings:
- Children learn languages most effectively through immersion
- Children’s native language skills influence their rate
of learning and proficiency in a second language.
In 9th and 10th Grades, EAL students participate in specially
designed EAL transition English, social studies, and science classes
to strength their English skills, with the goal to mainstream
them into the High School curriculum as quickly as possible.
The High School does not offer an EAL programme for beginners.
Students in 11th and 12th Grades are required to have strong English
skills in order to enrol.
Native Language Enrichment (NLE) Programme for 1st to 10th Grades
ACS encourages all students to maintain their native language proficiency as it helps their acquisition of additional languages. We promote a dynamic NLE programme across all our campuses, and the languages offered each year reflect the majority nationality groups in each school, including Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Norwegian, Spanish, Swedish, and Urdu.
ACS financially supports the NLE programme providing there are sufficient students for each language class (usually a minimum of three). Parents of students whose language is not currently offered are welcome to contact the appropriate Head of School’s Office to discuss the possibility of adding new language classes, or to request a list of recommended private instructors.
